Comparison of relative abundance and diversity of coccinellids (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.), under two production systems in the La Araucanía Region, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Vera,Marcela; Aguilera,Alfonso; Rebolledo,Ramón.
Coccinellids have been used, throughout the world, in biological control programs of agriculture pests. In Chile this family has been studied by various authors, which addresses issues such as biology, predatory activity and distribution in herbaceous species, shrubs and trees, but their situation in blueberries, where there is an abundance of species, is unknown Coccinellid beetles were counted visually on two blueberry orchards, under organic and conventional management. This study was conducted at the Maquehue Experiment Station, in the central valley of "La Araucanía Región" in southern Chile, from September 2007 through May 2008 and was divided into two periods: from September 2007 through February 2008 with visual counts only on the foliage of the...

Diversity and distribution of the Aegorhinus genus in the La Araucanía Region of Chile, with special reference to A. superciliosus and A.nodipennis Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Zavala,Andrea; Elgueta,Mario; Abarzúa,Juan; Aguilera,Alfonso; Quiroz,Andrés; Rebolledo,Ramón.
The Araucanía region is a berry producing area where important behavioral aspects of species in the genus Aegorhinus, a pest that affects crops, are still unknown. The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution, abundance and richness of these species in agroecological zones of La Araucanía Region and to determine the hosts in which they were found. The sites where these species were found were represented on a map divided into grids of 25 x 25 km. Eight species of Aegorhinus were found in the area, and Aegorhinus nodipennis and Aegorhinus superciliosus were the most abundant. The diversity was analyzed using the Shannon-Wiener index, and the equitability was determined using the Pielou index. The agroecological zone with the greatest...

Effect of an infusion of canelo and bitter lupin on Aegorhinus superciliosus adults Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Quintana,Romina; Palma,Alexis; Rebolledo,Ramón; Aguilera,Alfonso.
A. superciliosus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), known as "cabrito del maitén" (CM) among other names, is an important pest affecting fruit-bearing bushes in southern and central southern Chile. One means of control is the use of organically synthesized insecticides that target the adult, the application of which generally is disadvantageous because these insecticides have long-lasting residual effects and because spraying coincides with flowering and the harvest of the fruit. To complement other pesticides that are more degradable and selective and less harmful to the environment, this work studied the effect of an infusion of canelo buds (Drimys winteri) with leaves and stems of bitter lupin (Lupinus albus) on CM adults. The research evaluated mortality,...

Life, Seasonal Cycles, and Population Fluctuation of Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), in the Central Plain of La Araucanía Region, Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Rebolledo,Ramón; Sheriff,Johnny; Parra,Leonardo; Aguilera,Alfonso.
This study was performed on an alfalfa crop located on the central plain of a Araucanía Region, Chile and in the Laboratorio de Entomología Aplicada de la Facultad de Ciencias Agropecuarias y Forestales at the Universidad de La Frontera. Certain aspects of the biology of Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were determined, more specifically in relation to its life cycle, seasonality, and population fluctuation. It was established that this coccinellid requires 190.32 ± 10.2 degree-days to complete a generation under laboratory conditions. This information along with the field samplings made it possible to calculate that H. variegata completes four generations per season in the alfalfa crop (Medicago sativa L.).

Predatory capacity of Adalia angulifera (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) larvae on Myzocallis coryli (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Aguilera,Alfonso; Neculmán,Rodrigo; Rebolledo,Ramón.
In La Araucanía, the filbert aphid Myzocallis coryli (Goeze) is a pest that can cause various types of damage to hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) including reduction in nut size and nut emptiness. M. coryli can also leave hazel leaves susceptible to the fungus known as fumagina (Capnodium sp.), which causes decreased photosynthesis, particularly during the period when the tree is storing reserves for the following season. Knowledge about the natural enemies of M. coryli in Chile is in its early stages compared with other countries where the hazelnut crop is more extensive. Indeed, only 13 entomophagous predators have been recorded in La Araucanía thus far, including one Hemerobiidae, one Syrphidae, one Cecidomyiidae and ten Coccinellidae. Of this last...

The effects of the essential oil and hydrolate of canelo (Drimys winteri) on adults of Aegorhinus superciliosus in the laboratory Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Rebolledo,Ramón; Abarzúa,Juan; Zavala,Andrea; Quiroz,Andrés; Alvear,Marysol; Aguilera,Alfonso.
Drimys winteri (Magnoliids: Winteraceae), a native Chilean species, has potential for use as a botanical insecticide. This species contains chemicals with biological activity, such as isoprenoids and polyphenols. In this study, the effects of the essential oil and hydrolate of D. winteri on adults of Aegorhinus superciliosus were determined in the laboratory. This species is one of the most important pests associated with the cultivation of blueberries in Chile. The insecticidal effect of both distillates was determined for five concentrations of the essential oil and hydrolate of D. winteri, with ten replicates, in a completely random bioassay. The effects of these preparations on the egg-laying, hatching and feeding activity of A. superciliosus were also...

VARIACION DE LA DENSIDAD POBLACIONAL DE SMINTHURUS VIRIDIS (L.) (COLLEMBOLA: SMINTHURIDAE) EN LA IX REGION DE LA ARAUCANIA, CHILE Gayana
Klein,Carlos; Rebolledo,Ramón; Cerda,Claudia; Aguilera,Alfonso.
